When should a child’s hearing be tested?
- Repeated ear infections or other serious illnesses—for example, meningitis
- Speech development delay and unclear speech
- Failure to follow instructions or signs of behavioural problems
- Cannot understand what has been said unless they are looking at you
- Cannot identify where sounds are coming from
- Exhausted at the end of school from concentrating to understand speech
How does Mobile Paediatric Hearing Test work?
Hearing test appointments can be performed at the child’s home or school in Sydney St George & Sutherland Shire as long as it’s relatively quiet.
A hearing test for a child usually takes around 30 minutes. For children between 3-5 years old, we usually use a method called conditioned play audiometry (CPA), which uses toys to direct the child’s attention on the listening task and turns it into a game. For children 6 years and above, the testing process is similar to adults’ hearing test, where a child is required to press a button every time a sound is heard. Tympanometry, an objective test of the middle ear function using the latest equipment is also routinely performed. A detailed hearing test report will be provided after the hearing test.

$170-$200 per paediatric hearing test appointment by a fully qualified audiologist(specialist in hearing). If your child has a referral from any medical practitioner such as GP or paediatrician, you can claim back $35 – $45 from Medicare.
