Auditory Processing Disorder Treatment
Personalised online therapy Sydney and Australia-wide

Once an Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) diagnosis is confirmed, we create a deficit-targeted treatment plan based on the person’s specific test results. If a client struggles with hearing in background noise, we train speech-in-noise and binaural listening. If they find it hard to follow verbal instructions, we build auditory attention, sequencing, and working memory with graded tasks and home practice. If reading or spelling are difficult, we target phonological awareness and phonemic discrimination to improve sound–letter mapping. Plans are individualised for children and adults, with clear goals, short practice blocks, and regular progress checks. For children, we also use small tokens, rewards, and periodic encouragement notes to boost motivation and keep therapy engaging.
Treatment may include:
Personalised online auditory training
Delivered via Zoom by an audiologist, each session runs for about 50 to 65 minutes, including a short 5–10-minute break if needed. Every session is tailored to the client’s specific listening profile—targeting the most common phoneme (speech sound) errors, listening goals, and developmental level.
The aim is to retrain the brain to process challenging sounds more accurately and strengthen the listening skills that need improvement.
Training activities may include: Listening in noise (understanding speech with background sounds), Dichotic listening (using both ears together), Auditory memory (remembering what was heard), Phonological awareness (recognising sound patterns in words), Phonemic discrimination (telling similar speech sounds apart).
Sessions are designed to be engaging and interactive, helping clients stay focused while allowing new listening patterns to “sink in.” A typical treatment round consists of 14 sessions over approximately three months.
At-home auditory training program
Clients may also be given access to a game-based auditory training app that runs on a tablet or computer. The program uses adaptive listening games to strengthen auditory memory, attention, and listening-in-noise skills between sessions.
It is recommended to complete 15–20 minutes twice per week, while the audiologist monitors progress online and provides feedback and adjustments. One training block generally takes 2–6 months to complete, depending on progress.
Classroom and communication recommendations
When applicable, recommendations are provided to teachers and parents to support the client’s listening and learning needs in everyday environments, such as classroom seating, instruction style, and noise management strategies.
Remote microphone (FM) technology
Where appropriate, the use of remote microphone (FM) systems is recommended. These devices improve the signal-to-noise ratio by transmitting the speaker’s voice directly to the listener’s hearing device, helping make speech clearer in noisy settings such as classrooms or workplaces.
